March Classroom News:
Language Arts: Our reading focus this month is learning how to describe story elements (characters, setting, problem & solution) and to begin to make inferences. Inferences are made based on what readers SEE, READ and UNDERSTAND. We will practice making inferences based on what we know and explaining WHY we think something will or will not happen in a story or text. We continue to compare fiction and non-fiction stories. With non-fiction texts, your child is learning to use headings, captions, bold-faced words and other text features to learn more about things. Please encourage your child to tell you about the animal they chose for their research project we did in class! We are still working on writing a strong paragraph to share the information they've learned.
Spelling: Please be sure to check your child's spelling teacher's school messenger site in case your child misplaces their weekly list. Remember, every 3 weeks we have a REVIEW week. For example, we will have a REVIEW of weeks 10, 11 and 12 during the first full week of March.
Math: We are working on Unit 7: Number Sense and Computation which focuses heavily on PLACE VALUE. Students are working with 3 digit numbers (into the hundreds) and identifying the VALUE of each digit. We will begin addition and subtraction with and without regrouping! This is a BIG concept for 2nd graders. We'll look at how to regroup 10 ones into a new ten or "borrowing" from the tens to give to the ones! Lots and lots of practice will be important to master this concept. Please have your child refer to his/her 100 chart that I sent home for continued practice.
Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study of Geography! Students have learned the names and locations of our 7 continents, 5 oceans, 2 mountain regions in the U.S. and the Great Lakes! We have also worked on designing our own maps with: titles, map legends & a compass rose. Our next unit will be about Native Americans!
Teacher's Note: Interims will be coming home on Wednesday, March 15th. Please sign and return your child's interim. Our next school spirit day will be on Friday, March 31st and the theme is: TWIN DAY (dress like a buddy!).
