April Classroom News:
Language Arts: Our reading focus this month is learning how to SUMMARIZE what we read using our own words and vocabulary from a story or text. Students continue to use their five-finger retell (first, then, next, after that and finally) to keep events in order sequence. Another language arts piece we've been working on is distinguishing FACTS vs. OPINIONS. Your child should be able to tell you how they are different! After we return from our Spring Break, we will begin learning about different forms of poetry and writing some of our own. We will also wrap up our writing workshop piece on creating our very own legends! The kids have had a BLAST writing these!
Spelling: Please be sure to check your child's spelling teacher's school messenger site in case your child misplaces their weekly list. Remember, every 3 weeks we have a REVIEW week. When we return from Spring Break, we will have 3 more weeks of spelling lists! It is very important that students are practicing their words at home!
Math: We are working on Unit 9: Number Sense and Computation. Students have worked hard in learning double-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. We have also learned how to ESTIMATE using our rounding skills! Our unit test will be after the break. Our next unit will continue to work on computation skills. Please encourage your child to practice their addition and subtraction facts at home to build their fluency and confidence.
Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study of Native Americans. We have read wonderful legends and enjoyed comparing the Indians of the Eastern Woodlands, Great Plains and Southwest. We will have our unit test after the Spring Break. Our next science unit will have us explore WEATHER!
Teacher's Note: Report Cards will go home on April 25th. This is the same day as our upcoming field trip to Bull Run Park to watch Native Lands. We are all very excited for this fun day of outdoor learning. More field trip information will come home with your child when we return from the break. I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful and safe Spring Break!
