Language Arts: We are busy learning about sequencing a story and finding the main idea of fiction and non-fiction books.
Math: We are working on recognizing the value of coins and counting money. Rounding numbers is on the horizon!
Science: We are learning about Ecosystems and Adaptations.
We finished our unit on Economics. Our next unit in social studies will start when we are finished with Adaptations.
Just Right Books
It is important that our students know how to pick a “just right” book. They should choose a book they are interested in, open up to the middle of the book, and see if they can read one page with less than five mistakes. If they can, then this is a just right book for read-to-self time. They need to find a comfortable place to read that is spread out from their classmates, and they need to read silently or in a whisper so as not to disturb their classmates. During read-to-self the students are practicing fluency and will eventually be able to self-check their own comprehension. Right now we are working to build our stamina for reading to ourselves by extending our reading time each day. Remember...."If you are not enjoying your reading.....then you are reading the wrong books." :-)
