April 13, 2020

Dear Families,

We hope you all enjoyed a beautiful Spring Break even though it may not have felt much different from our normal weeks at home! We appreciate all the teaching and learning you are doing with your third grader!  We are here to support you in all the ways that we can!

As we move forward with the remainder of the school year, we will be providing your child a Choice Board with optional activities that reinforce objectives taught throughout the first three quarters of 3rd grade.  Again, these assignments are optional, but we hope this guidance makes learning at home clearer and effective.  Choose activities each day; do not feel your child needs to complete all activities.  Feel free to structure the days as you see fit with your family’s schedule. The chart will be posted on our TEAM page on the GKES website and will also be emailed at the start of each week. ☺

New this quarter is office hours!  This is a great opportunity to reach out to us through email with any questions and concerns.  We are happy to help your child understand assignments on the Choice Board.  Your teacher’s office hours will take place on Wednesday’s from 9:00am-10:00am.  If a conversation is a better way to address questions and concerns, your child’s teacher may contact you by phone.

We love connecting with our students with Zoom!   This will be our time to visit with one another and share our learning.  Your child’s teacher will set aside a time weekly to meet virtually.

Thank you for continuing to support your child’s learning from home! We sincerely miss seeing our 3rd graders light up the hallways of Glenkirk each day!!!

Sincerely,
The 3rd grade team

March 18th Updates

Hi everyone,
I hope everyone is well and enjoying some time at home with your family.  PWCS is updating information daily - please continue to monitor the PWCS website for the most up-to-date information.  As the days pass, look for more additional information as more decisions are made about school.
I just added the Study Island calendar to the my webpage in my files and documents that can be found below.
In addition to the school websites that are available to use each day - please remember to read each day with your child.  Set aside a specific time each day to read and respond to writing.  Your child can use a journal to write down their thoughts as they read or comment on characters, make a prediction, or make a real-life connection.  Writing in journals, creating a home-made book, writing letters to family/friends, and researching a favorite topic is a great way to maintain writing skills at home.  The last week of school, students were working on a non-fiction book - something that they considered themselves to be "an expert" on the topic.  Students could continue to research/learn more information on this topic that they could add to their books at a later time.
Maintaining math skills is important as well.  Our last unit of study was measurement and these skills can be reviewed on Study Island.  Fractions, money, multiplication, place value to 99,999, add & subtraction to 3 digits, and rounding to the nearest 10, 100, & 1,000 are all skills that we have covered this year.  In my files/folders - the study guides from previous units are available.
Stay healthy and please let me know if you have any other questions/concerns.
Take care!

Important Update

Good afternoon, parents,

In light of PWC schools closing for a month, we are asking that you continue to work with your child at home. As you know, your child was given calendars of optional Study Island homework. Although it is optional, we highly encourage your child to set aside time each day to review skills which have already been taught. Please do not ask your child to work on skills which have not been taught yet. At this point in the year, we have not taught geometry or place value to 6 digits. However, all other skills have been covered. In reading, all skills have been taught. However, we continue to teach these skills as some of them have not been mastered yet. Please look for emails from your child's teacher throughout this time period. Your children have access to Study Island, RAZ-kids, and Dreambox. These websites cover skills for both reading and math which are most critical since we give SOL's for these two subjects. Of course, your child will benefit most from reading and responding in writing to what they have read. We highly encourage you to visit the public library to check out books throughout this time period. If you do not want to go to the library, please utilize RAZ-kids or swap books with neighbors or friends. We do not have any additional information. Please continue to check the Prince William County website for updates.

Feel free to reach out should you have any academic questions.

Stay healthy and enjoy this time with your children.

Sincerely,
The Third Grade Team

You may contact me by email or phone should you have any questions. However, I will not be able to take your phone calls during the school day as I will be working with your children. If I do not respond to your email within 24 hours, feel free to send it again.
