Language Arts-We are still working on learning how to ask and answer questions when reading passages or books. Students are learning how to look for answers in their passages and how to infer answers based on their prior knowledge and the clues given in texts. We are starting Book Clubs and will be discussing the chapters in small groups. The students were given "easier" books to start with and we will progress to more challenging selections at a later time. We are trying to build reading stamina as well as prepare students for questions they will be exposed to on the SOL's. Our new skills that we are practicing are commas in a series and proper use of the apostrophe.
Math- We are working on our new unit of measurement and geometry. The students are learning about lines, polygons, area, and perimeter. Please review weekly homework.
Science- Students have just started a new unit on animals. We are learning how we get energy from producers and other consumers. New vocabulary includes: herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, producer, consumer, and food chain.
Social Studies-We are introducing the ancient cultures with the study of Ancient Greece. We will be learning about their contributions to art, architecture, sports, and government.
Homework Binders and Agendas
Students should be bringing home their homework binders each night. Please check for assignments in the agendas. As the year progresses, we will add more study guides to the binder. We introduce new spelling words on Mondays and test on Fridays. Please ask your child to show you their words that are glued into their agendas.
Thanks for supporting your child's education!
