For the remainder of the school year, I will be sending out weekly choice boards. These activities are optional and will not be graded and the content will focus on information that we have previously learned.  Additionally, I will be holding weekly office hours on Tuesdays from 9:00 am-10:00am.  During this time I will be available for questions over email or phone.  Also, we will join with Mrs. Powers' class for a weekly Zoom meeting every Tuesday at 2:00,  beginning April 21st.

Hello!  I hope you and your families are staying healthy and you have been able to find unique ways to stay busy and continue the learning process at home.  I enjoyed the first few days at home and am now beginning to go a little stir crazy.  I'm ready to be back in the classroom!  However, my 5 month old puppies are overjoyed at having us home all day!  They've been getting lots of walks and trips to the nearby dog park.
Below is a great social story that you can read to your child to help explain why we are not in school.  Also, wanted to let you know about a few websites that we use at school everyday and you can access from home.  We use www.starfall.com for calendar time everyday and it has many other fun learning games that the kids enjoy.  In addition, some of my first and second grade students also use Dreambox Math on a daily basis and can continue with that at home.  The easiest way to access that site is through the Glenkirk homepage under "Students" and then "Student Web Links.  Please email me if you have questions or need your child's password.  I'm checking email frequently.

Helpful Hints for Learning at Home 

 

  1.  Create a Visual Schedule- Following a visual schedule increases the predictability of your child’s environment. Understanding what comes next, and when a particular activity is going to happen, increases your child’s feelings of security and helps them understand what is expected, as well as what to expect.  Please let me know if you’d like me to create one for you. 

 

  1. Use a timer- Visual timers are ideal in assisting with transitions which can be especially difficult for those on the Autism Spectrum. Dear Parents,

      Welcome back to a new school year!  My name is Kerri Bonfadini and I am your child’s special education teacher.  Your child may be with me all day or for parts of the day according to his/her IEP. 

    I have 20 years of experience teaching special education.  This is my 5th year teaching at Glenkirk Elementary.  Prior to teaching at Glenkirk, I taught at Tyler Elementary, Belmont Elementary and in Culpeper County.  I graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor’s in Psychology, a Master’s in Special Education and a certificate in Teaching Children with Autism.  I live in Culpeper County with my husband and 16 year year old son.  I also have a 20 year old daughter who is beginning her 3rd year at the University of Virginia.

          Kristen Kissell is the full time Instructional Assistant in our classroom.  This is her fourth year working in the Autism classroom and we are lucky to have her!   She has a Bachelor’s  from Mansfield University in social work.  She lives in Gainesville with her husband, 11 year old daughter and 15 year old son.

     Due to multiple grade levels and developmental levels within our classroom, curriculum will be individualized for each student based on his/her IEP goals and objectives. A variety of evidence based practices for teaching students with Autism will be utilized including instruction based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and structured teaching.

    We will have a daily snack time.  Please send in a healthy snack for your child each day.  If it’s easier, you can send snack in bulk and I will let you know when the supply is getting low.
