Virginia Reader's Choice
Glenkirk Elementary will be participating in Virginia Reader's Choice! Students are encouraged to read the selection of books chosen for their grade this year and then vote on their favorite. They must read 4 or more books to be eligible to vote. They may also have books read to them in order to be eligible to vote (this is especially good for younger students).
Virginia Reader's Choice is sponsored by THE VIRGINIA STATE READING ASSOCIATION in association with THE VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIANS, THE VIRGINIA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, & THE LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA YOUTH SERVICES.
To encourage young readers to become better acquainted with contemporary books with outstanding literary appeal, to broaden students’ awareness of literature as a life-long pleasure, to encourage reading aloud in classrooms as a means of introducing reading for pleasure, and to honor favorite books and their authors.
A winner will be announced for each level- Primary, Elementary, Middle, and High School. The winning book will have gathered the highest number of votes in their category. The deadline for voting for VRC books is April 15, 2017. The winners will be announced in the Spring of each year.

Our mission is for students to access and use resources and for students to read for both pleasure and information so that they can become life long learners.
Check out policy: Kindergartners may check out one book at a time, first graders will start by checking out one book and as the year progresses they will be checking out 2 books, second and third graders may check out 2 books, fourth graders may check out 2 books and will transition to 3 books as the year progresses, and fifth graders may check out 3 books. Each class visits the library for a lesson and book check out once every ten school days, so library books are considered late after ten school days.
