September Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order by President Lynn Mallon at 6:30pm.

Officers’ Reports

President: given by Lynn Mallon

  • Introduction of board members for the 2019/2020 school year: President Lynn Mallon, Acting Vice President Karen Bath, Treasurer Jennifer Oister, Vice Treasurer Crystal Perseo, and Secretary Kristen Gustafson.
  • Welcomed and thanked new parents for attending.
  • The purpose of PTO is to support all students by funding events, classrooms, and school improvements.Although we encourage parents to participate in meetings, it is not required.
  • We need parent involvement to make events a success.Ways to be involved include joining or chairing a committee, participating in luncheons, making copies, and helping out at events.
  • The Ice Cream Social will be Friday, September 13 and is free to all families.An RSVP will be sent out and will include a dairy-free option.
  • Tanya Donalty will coordinate the 5th grade luncheon.
  • Boosterthon is scheduled for October.The big school improvement will be revamping the library.We will discuss this more at the next meeting.

Treasurer: given by Jennifer Oister

  • Presented budget for the school year. Members will vote on the budget September 26-30.We will vote to accept the majority recommendation at the October meeting.
  • Not only does Boosterthon fund school-wide improvements, but 5% of Boosterthon profits will go to classrooms!Homeroom teachers will receive $125, encore teachers will receive $150, and specialty departments will receive $100.The deadline for teachers is January 31.

Committee Reports

Microgrants: given by Crystal Perseo

  • PTO will fund two $250 microgrants each month between November and April. There can be one per grade level, encore, and specialty department each month.PTO membership dues fund microgrants, so it is important for as many families as possible to join PTO! Their membership dues go directly to classrooms!

Box Tops: given by Kristen Gustafson

  • Box Tops will be phasing out their physical Box Tops and transitioning to electronic Box Tops. Using the Box Tops app, parents can scan their grocery receipts within 14 days and receive credit for their items.Parents can see their contribution and the school’s earnings to date. Physical Box Tops are still being accepted.We are expecting less money this year as families adjust to the new program.

CertifiKID: given by Kristen Gustafson

  • CertifiKID offers discounts on family-friendly events. Use promo code GKES on purchases over $20 and Glenkirk will receive $5.

Harris Teeter and Amazon Smile: given by Jen Oister

  • Remember to link your accounts to Glenkirk.

Spirit Wear: given by Page Cabe

  • There are 11 days to order GKES spirit wear online. There are many new styles, including color castle shirts. Families have shared positive feedback about the new styles. Teachers can personalize their shirts for free.

Fall SEP: given by Lynn Mallon

  • We are using Enrichment Matters for fall and spring SEP.This blends Glenkirk teachers and outside providers to offer exciting enrichment courses including chess, medical school, art safari, musical theater, basketball, Kwon’s, sign language, ukulele, Lego, and cursive/calligraphy/coloring. Although prices are slightly higher than previous years, classes meet more each session. Flyers will be sent home soon with class descriptions and dates. Online registration will be September 25-October 2.Classes will be held October 15-December 12.

Talent Show: given by Lynn Mallon

  • The Talent Show will take place October 24 in the evening. More information will go home soon. Samantha Fulda is looking for volunteers to judge and MC the event.

Pack 28: given by Lynn Mallon

  • Pack 28 will take over caring for the Knights’ Path. They would like to be involved and help during events.

Principal’s Address: given by Marissa Miranda

  • The Ice Cream Social is coming up and free to all families! The photo booth is returning this year, so students can get their picture taken with Mrs. Miranda and Mrs. Kilgore.
  • Boosterthon is a fun event and the school’s main fundraiser. This year we will improve and update the library with new paint, tables, chairs, seating options, and revamping as much as possible. Get the students to notice and appreciate these changes!
  • Thank you to the Eagle Scout who painted the logo and repainted lines on the basketball court. These are small improvements that make a big difference!Students were very excited about this.
  • Mrs. Miranda and Mrs. Kilgore will make announcements at Back to School Night to encourage parents to join PTO.


New Business

Vote for Vice President: At the end of the 18/19 school year, Karen Bath volunteered to serve at PTO Vice President for the 19/20 school year.  She has experience serving on the board.  Everyone in attendance unanimously voted for her to become Vice President.

PTO Membership Drive: We have 97 members so far.  Our goal is 300.  Lynn Mallon will send electronic membership forms to teachers who will then send them to students.  PTO will have a table at the Ice Cream Social and possibly Back to School Night.

January Family Event: We are seeking input and help as we begin planning this event.

Next meeting is Tuesday, October 1 at 6:30pm.
